Build a Successful Accounting Business!

I help Accountants build & scale SUCCESSFUL ACCOUNTING BUSINESSES! I’ve been spending a lot of time with Accountants lately. Maybe it’s because I studied accounting in college… so I have some friends in that world. Or maybe it’s because I have a whole team of accountants that work at my company ApplicantPro. But in actuality… it’s because I’ve taken on a new consulting client that helps accounts roll out tax planning in their business. All of that time talking to Accountants lead me to an epiphany... the #1 thing that you need to effectively grow a business is confidence. This isn’t just for accountants... it’s for plumbers, and restaurant owners, and even software people. The problem is... most of us start businesses with our confidence being in our own personal abilities to do ”the job”... whatever that job is. Our accounting confidence comes from our KNOWLEDGE, our SKILLS, and our EXPERIENCE. These 3 things make us great accountants. Unfortunately... these things don’t make us great business leaders. Your confidence as a business leader comes from a different set of powers. 1- your ability to attract new ideal customers 2- your ability to effectively build & manage a team 3- your ability to create systems that run without your personal intervention This podcast is dedicated to the bookkeepers & accountants out there who are trying to grow their skills & abilities beyond just being an amazing accountant and into the world of being amazing business leaders!

This morning I had an epiphany... the #1 thing that you need to effectively grow a business is confidence.
This isn't just for accountants... it's for plumbers, and restaurant owners, and even software people.
The problem is... most of us start businesses with our confidence being in our own personal abilities to do "the job"... whatever that job is.
Our accounting confidence comes from our KNOWLEDGE, our SKILLS, and our EXPERIENCE.
These 3 things make us great accountants.
And that works great when we set up our own accounting practice... as long as what we are doing is simply working "for ourselves... by ourselves" as a contract accountant.
BUT THINGS CHANGE WHEN YOU WANT TO GROW
If you wake up one day and decide to grow your solo-practice into a real business... well it's going to require that you create a new type of confidence.
BUSINESS LEADER CONFIDENCE
Your confidence as a business leader comes from a different set of powers.
1- your ability to attract new ideal customers

2- your ability to effectively build & manage a team

3- your ability to create systems that run without your personal intervention
In this episode I'll unpack what you need to do to create the confidence to scale your accounting business!

I've been spending a lot of time with accountants lately... and I've come to one conclusion...
ACCOUNTANTS HAVE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS!
This is true of all business owners…
But the main compliant that I’ve been hearing and digging into is around the seasonality of their businesses.
It normally starts by talking about how many hours they work during business season- Tax season- Year end closing time- Etc
That leads to the fact that they have to put in so many hours near deadlines because their clients wait to the last minute to get their information over… they procrastinate… and all send in their info a few days before the deadline.
And as a master procrastinator for life… I can see that this seems like a problem that is almost impossible for you to solve for someone else.
MY FAVORITE TED TALK
Tim Urban talks about 3 main people inside the brain of the average person.
- The rational decision maker- The instant gratification monkey- And the panic monster
He clearly (and hilariously explains) exactly why it is in most peoples human natures to procrastinate things… specifically things that don’t seem to be as high of a priority

BUT WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ACCOUNTING?
Listen to this episode where I re-tell Tim's story... using tax client situations... and explain exactly what steps to take to solve for it!
